Red Dot vs Holographic Sight: Which Should You Choose?
Choose a red dot sight if you want the lightest, most efficient 1× optic with very long battery life. Choose a holographic sight if you want a larger window, a reticle that stays crisp across the glass and dedicated night vision modes, and can accept more weight and shorter battery life. This guide compares the two technologies with JOVSTAR’s JV-RDS-01, JV-HRDS series and JV-HS-01. For all models, see our red dot sight selection guide.

How the Reticle Is Made
Red dot (reflex) sights
A small LED shines onto a curved front lens with a coating that reflects the LED’s color. The curve collimates the light so the dot appears far away and stays on the target as the eye moves. LEDs draw very little current, which is why the JV-HRDS series is rated for ≥10,000 hours on one CR2032 coin cell.
Holographic sights
A holographic sight uses a laser diode to light a reticle recorded as a hologram inside the window. Because the reticle is reconstructed across the window, it keeps its shape and sharpness even if part of the window is obscured. The laser and its optics draw more power, so the JV-HS-01 uses AA batteries and runs for ≥8 hours of continuous operation.
Where Red Dot Sights Win
- Weight and size: ≤50 g for the compact JV-HRDS series, <150 g for the full-size JV-RDS-01.
- Battery life: thousands of hours on a coin cell, so the sight can be left on.
- Reticle choice: the JV-RDS-01 offers six dot-circle patterns, from a 1 MOA dot for precise aiming to a 30 MOA circle for fast pick-up.
- Cost: simpler optics and electronics make red dots the economical choice for volume programs.
Where Holographic Sights Win
- Larger window: ≥28 × 18 mm on the JV-HS-01, giving a wide, open view.
- Crisp reticle: the holographic reticle stays sharp for users with astigmatism, who often see an LED dot as a smudge or starburst.
- Night vision modes: dedicated settings keep the reticle dim enough to use through night vision devices without flare.
- Repeatability: ≥±10 mil adjustment and ≤1 mil zero position variation after remounting.
- Toughness: 1500 g impact rating and -40℃ to +55℃ operation.
Adding Magnification
Both types can be paired with a magnifier. The JV-TS-03 adds 3× magnification behind the sight, with 60 mm eye relief and a flip-to-side Picatinny mount. If you want one optic for close and mid range, the JV-ZS-01 switches between 1× (21° field of view) and 6× (3.5°).
How to Choose
- Is weight or battery life the priority? Choose a red dot.
- Do users have astigmatism or use night vision? Choose the holographic sight.
- Is the platform small? Choose the compact JV-HRDS series.
- Do you need detail at distance? Add the JV-TS-03 magnifier, or choose the JV-ZS-01.
Which JOVSTAR Sight Fits Your Program

FAQ
Which lasts longer on batteries, red dot or holographic?
Red dot sights. JOVSTAR LED red dots such as the JV-HRDS series are rated for ≥10,000 hours on one CR2032, while the holographic JV-HS-01 runs ≥8 hours on AA batteries.
Are holographic sights better with astigmatism?
Many users with astigmatism see an LED dot as a smudge or starburst, while a holographic reticle tends to stay sharper. Trying both is the best test.
Can a red dot or holographic sight be used with a magnifier?
Yes. The JOVSTAR JV-TS-03 3× magnifier mounts behind either type and flips to the side when not needed.
